WHAT THE WORLD PUTS ON ITS HOT DOGS

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Chicago-style dog is topped with yellow mustard, dark green relish, onions, tomato slices, pepperoncini, cucumber slices, celery salt and served in a steamed poppy seed bun.

New York serves them with steamed onions and pale yellow mustard sauce.

In Atlanta and other areas of the Southern U.S. you’ll end up with your dog “dragged through the garden”, or topped with coleslaw.

In Kansas City they’re served with sauerkraut and melted Swiss.

In South Korea, vendors coat them with sugar.

In Denmark and Norway, hot dogs, or “pølse”, are served with bacon and or cheese.

In Quebec, Canada, “Michigan”-style hot dogs are served with spaghetti sauce.

In some parts of South America, known as perros calientes, they are often served with potato chip crumbs, sliced onion, Colombian country cheese, honey, ketchup or mustard (and sometimes a little cooked quail egg on top).

In Chile, street vendors sell completos, literally meaning complete, topped with diced tomatoes, sauerkraut, ketchup, sweet mustard, and mayonnaise. The vendors often provide Colombian Aji, a spicy red pepper sauce to accompany the completo. Replace the sauerkraut with guacamole, and you’ve got an Italiano.

In Venezuela, street vendors offer “perros con todo”, or “dogs with all” with finely chopped cabbage, potato chip crumbs, chopped onion, white cheese, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and tomato sauce. Additional condiments offered include salsa, tartar sauce, Tabasco, Salsa Guasacaca – Spicy Avocado Sauce, cheese sauce, garlic sauce, onion sauces, and American BBQ sauce.

In Austria and parts of Germany, customers at hot dog stands have the option of eating sausage on a plate or having it served in “hot dog form”, which comes in a hollowed out baguette.

Friday, May 28th, 2010

If hot dogs aren’t the official food of Summer, they’re a close second.

In 2009, American consumers spent more than $1.6 billion on hot dogs and sausages.

Los Angeles residents consume more hot dogs than any other city, beating out New York and San Antonio/Corpus Christi, Texas.

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport consumes SIX times more hot dogs, 725,000 more than Los Angeles International Airport and LaGuardia Airport combined.

On Independence Day, Americans will enjoy 150 million hot dogs.

During Hot Dog Season, Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs or 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that period.

U.S. soldiers in military posts around the world — from Fort Meyers in Arlington, Virginia, to Okinawa, Japan, to Aqaba, Jordon  — consumed 2.4 million hot dogs last year.

WHEN WE’RE ATTACKED BY SHARKS

Friday, May 28th, 2010

You’re most likely to be attacked by a shark on a Sunday, in under 6 feet of water and during a new moon, according to new research from the University of Florida. But sharks are not weekend warriors. Rather, it is human leisure habits that lead to the fewest number of human encounters on Wednesdays and the highest on Sundays, followed by Saturdays, according to the report. The study by UF researchers studied shark attacks that occurred in the waters off Volusia County between 1956 and 2008. The Volusia County coastline is dubbed the shark attack capital of the world. The study also finds that sharks are most likely to attack people wearing black and white, followed by black and yellow bathing suits — attesting to sharks’ abilities to see contrast. Ninety percent of those attacked were male, 77 percent were between ages 11 and 30, and 98 percent were white. The study also found that 61 percent of those bitten were surfers, and that the majority of the attacks occurred in August.
